Omicron enters Vashi

A youth coming from an African city vias Hyderabad has been diagnosed with Omicron

NAVI MUMBAI, Dec 21 (The CONNECT) – Even as the World Health Organisation (WHO) has warned that Omicron is spreading faster than Delta variant of the novel corona virus, a youth coming from Kenya has been detected with the new virus.

The youth was tested at Hyderabad where he landed from the African country. But before the report came, he travelled to Vashi by road. On test here, he was tested positive for Omicron, a civic spokesperson confirmed.

The patient has been admitted to MGM COVID care centre at Sanpada in Navi Mumbai where he has been isolated.

Doctors have wondered as to how the Hyderabad authorities allowed him to travel and didn’t quarantine him even forcibly. “It is high time now for the authorities across to reopen the compulsory quarantine centres and detain people moving about so freely,” said one doctor.

Meanwhile, the WHO has called for cancelling social events and gatherings as “an event cancelled is better than a life cancelled”.

“It’s better to cancel now and celebrate later, than to celebrate now and grieve later,” WHO Director general Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said addressing the global media last night (IST).

He said it is more likely that people who have been vaccinated or have recovered from COVID-19 could be infected or reinfected

There can be no doubt that increased social mixing over the holiday period in many countries will lead to increased cases, overwhelmed health systems and more deaths.
